Industrial Unionism

BIWU organizes industrially rather than by trade. Our goal is to organize all Baking industries into One Big Union.

Solidarity Unionism

We believe in working together with other trade unions that shares same vision with us. Here you can find out more about our unique and innovative organizing strategy, Solidarity Unionism.

Welcome to BAKERS INDUSTRY WORKERS UNION

Baking Industry Workers Union (BIWU) is the largest organization representing employees in the baking sector in Zimbabwe. The role of BIWU and its function is to protect, promote and advance the interests of employees in the baking sector.

BIWU is a member-run union for all Bakery workers, a union dedicated to organizing on the job, in our industries and in our communities. BIWU members are organizing to win better conditions today and build a nation with economic democracy tomorrow. We want our workplaces run for the benefit of workers and communities rather than for a handful of bosses and executives.

Our History

The Baking Industrial Workers Union & six other sub-sectors defected from United Food and Allied Workers Union (UFAWUZ) in 1995 to formulate Food Federation & Allied Workers Union of Zimbabwe FFAWUZ after serious allegations of misappropriation of funds by the then UFAWUZ leadership. For more information, check the Zimbabwean Government Gazette of 13 October 2000 page 112 and the letter from the registrar dated 30 August 1999 (Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare).
